We provide sustainable systems for documenting, preserving, and sharing invaluable histories while supporting peaceful dialogue, reconciliation, and justice.
Our Foundation
The Valley of Memory Foundation is an independent, non-profit institution dedicated to preserving cultural heritage and documenting suppressed histories, and advancing restorative justice across Nigeria and the Global South.
It exists to ensure that the memories, traditions, and identities of communities — particularly those marginalized by conflict, displacement, or historical injustice — are protected for future generations.
Recognizing that cultural memory is an essential pillar of justice and sustainable development, the Foundation works collaboratively with communities, scholars, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, governments, and international partners to build reliable, accessible archives of historical knowledge.
From Documentation to Justice
Our work extends beyond documentation. We believe that preserving history creates opportunities for healing, reconciliation, and equitable development. Through research, storytelling, education, advocacy, and strategic partnerships, the Foundation transforms forgotten histories into instruments for truth, dialogue, and restorative justice.
The Foundation serves as both a guardian of cultural heritage and an advocate for communities seeking recognition, dignity, and inclusion. By integrating physical archives, digital repositories, museums, educational initiatives, and community-led memory projects, it establishes a comprehensive ecosystem in which history is preserved, shared, and used to inspire positive social change.
Vision
A world where every culture is preserved, every history is honored, and justice is secured for all marginalized communities.
The Valley of Memory Foundation envisions a future in which the histories, identities, and cultural expressions of all peoples are valued as essential components of humanity's shared heritage. We aspire to become a leading institution that protects endangered memories, strengthens cultural identity, and promotes restorative justice by ensuring that communities have the opportunity to preserve, interpret, and share their own stories.
We believe that societies become stronger when they acknowledge their past, celebrate their diversity, and confront historical injustices with courage and integrity. Our vision is one of inclusion, reconciliation, and sustainable peace founded upon historical truth and collective memory.
Mission
The mission of the Valley of Memory Foundation is to preserve cultural heritage, document suppressed histories, and advance restorative justice across Nigeria and the Global South. We accomplish this through:
Community-led historical documentation
Preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage
Strategic advocacy for historical recognition and justice
Public education and research
Digital innovation in archival preservation
Partnerships with local, national, and international institutions
Capacity building for communities to document and preserve their own histories
Through these approaches, we seek to ensure that no community is forgotten, no history is erased, and no cultural heritage is lost to future generations.
